President's Message

Welcome back, Weavers!

​

Our first fall meeting is on Monday, September 21st at the N. Berkeley Senior Center.  10:00 AM - 12:00 Noon.

 

Please come and share what you have been creating during the summer hiatus. It could be Weaving, Dyeing, or maybe something else that you’re still working on. It’s All of interest.  

 

It will be good to get back in touch with you as a guild.

  1. New Chair members! Over the summer, we expanded our roster with Bea Deering as Membership Chair and Penny Peters, our Social and Field Trip Organizer Chair.

  4. CNCH 2027: GGW is hosting the Silent Auction. Focus is on handmade items made by guild members.

Feeling 

The word we associate with our emotional state was originally a textile word: 

 

  • Old English Roots: The root fÄ“lan originally focused purely on the physical sense of touch using the skin and fingertips.

  • Late 12th Century: The Etymology Online Dictionary notes that the noun feeling first appeared in late Old English/early Middle English to describe the literal "act of touching" or the "sense of touch".

  • Mid-14th Century: The meaning expanded from physical skin sensations to internal, conscious emotional experiences.

  • Mid-15th Century: The word grew to also mean an opinion or what one feels about a specific subject.

The Golden Gate Weavers Guild meets on the third Monday of the month, 10:00 am to Noon in the Gooseberry Room, at the North Berkeley Senior Center, 1901 Hearst Ave, or on Zoom. No meetings in July, August, and December.

Double Cloth Basics for 4 & 8 Shaft Weavers

 

Susie Hodges is leading the learning:

The Study Group on DOUBLE CLOTH BASICS FOR 4 & 8 SHAFT  WEAVERS will meet Saturday , September 26, 10 AM at (Susie's house or the NB Library). We will discuss the 2 ways to thread and weave a sampler of layers and tubes at the first meeting. A handout will be available.

 

  • Bring any project or questions you have to share on the subject.

 

Subjects for future meetings are double weave blocks and pick-up patterns. You do not have to weave a sampler to participate, but you will learn more if you do.

 

Jennifer Moore's book, Double Weave, is a good book on the subject.

​

You can join the Study Group at any time, and get help or to check out what we're doing. It's a great way to see how your fellow guild members develop ideas, plan, sample, and make cloth. Below are some photos from the group meeting.

CNCH 2027 Planning  

  • Area Three, which includes GGW, is planning the 2027 Conference. Vicky and Bernie are part of the planning group.

    • Golden Gate Weavers has been assigned the task of Grant Fundraiser

EVENTS

  • Joy Stockdale, solo exhibition, September 26 to October 24 at the John Natsoulas Gallery, Davis. Using polychromatic screen printing techniques, she creates elegant wall hangings inspired by different plant and geometric forms.   • Textiles Bazaar, Textiles Arts Council, Saturday, November 7, 10am - 4 pm, St. Mary's Cathedral Event Center 1111 Gough St, San Francisco, https://www.textileartscouncil.org/

  • Fibershed Winter Market, Saturday, November 14, 10 am to 3 pm, Dance Palace, 503 B Street, Point Reyes Station. Come for locally grown, naturally dyed goods, minimally processed and sourced from across Northern California. More than 20 vendors, from local farmers and ranchers to artisans, all of whom are helping to shape our natural fiber ecosystem.   • Arts of Indigenous America, ends August 31, 2028, at the de Young. The theme “Relationship to Place.” Developed with Native scholars and in consultation with communities of origin, the project centers Indigenous values and voices.
