President's Message

Dear Weaving Friends,

Welcome to 2026! I am happy to share many exciting updates as we start the new year.

Guild Meeting

Our first guild meeting of the year will be on ZOOM, on Monday, January 19th. Due to the Federal holiday, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, the Senior Center is closed. Bernie will be sending out the Zoom invitation a little before 10:00 AM on Monday.

The good news is that we have Liz Schott here to talk about Dorothy Liebes, famous for her use of “A Dark, A Light and A Bright” in her textiles. Liz will share some of Dorothy's history and the impact she had on textile design. Her talk is titled: "Dorothy Liebes and the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition."

Richmond Art Center 90th Anniversary Exhibition

We have an amazing opportunity for Golden Gate Weavers to exhibit in the upcoming show, opening April 8th. Lonnie is leading this effort. Please see the information below on the two ways to participate, the submission process and some important dates.

Get Together and Study Group

We had a Great turn-out at our recent Get-Together at the North Berkeley library - 18 people! The room was filled with Weaver’s energy. Thank you all for coming. Koko, Bernie, and Susie shared ideas on a new study group that will kick off in February: Weaving Cloth for Clothing. This will be an opportunity for participants to Explore, Design, Plan, then Weave and Sew an article of clothing from cloth they have woven.

Check our guild calendar (emailed to members) for more dates and meeting locations.

Look forward to seeing you soon.

Happy Weaving. ~ Vicky

RAC Exhibition News

As many of you know, the Richmond Art Center will celebrate its 90th anniversary this year by hosting a special exhibit in the main Exhibit Hall. They have invited the Golden Gate Weavers and the Bay Area Basketmakers to participate. The theme of the Exhibit is: Weaving Between the Lines, From Tradition to Innovation and Back.

Two Ways to Exhibit

1: WOVEN TOGETHER

This exhibit will consist of a set of Weavers' textiles, 12” x 12” weavings, to be mounted by each weaver on birch panel(s). Contact Lonnie if you need more panels.  The theme is SPRING - think fresh, New, Future. The Sky is the Limit on what you weave. It is a collaborative piece that highlights the interconnected and social nature of weaving and being part of a guild. How individual threads, stories, techniques, materials, and makers come together to create something unified. The 12” squares members weave will form a larger display. Final collaboration size: 64 x 64 Inches.

The ONLY condition is to use one of the following green colors somewhere within your 12" piece (as much or as little as you desire).

  • Mercerized Perle cotton, 037 Bali green*

  • Harrisville Shetland and Highland Grass wool somewhere

Please sign your name on the back of each panel(s).

*Vicky has a large cone of the Bali green thread if anyone needs more. Text me Vicky to make arrangements.

  • SUBMISSIONS: No submission form needed for the Woven Together exhibits.

  • DROP OFF: The deadline for this submission is March 2nd, 1:00 -2:30 PM, at the North Berkeley Library, 1170 The Alameda. Please bring your mounted work to the library’s downstairs meeting room.

2: WEAVING BETWEEN THE LINES - Tradition, Innovation and Back

Here is where we can showcase our guild members’ weavings! All members are encouraged to submit their handwoven pieces. We want to show your technique and creativity for the most representative showing of our guild’s work.

  • SUBMISSIONS: This submission requires a form (sent via email by Lonnie to guild members). You also need to provide a picture of your work when submitting. The deadline for submissions is January 22nd. The preferred method is an online submission with a picture to Lonnie's email by 6:00 PM. Alternatively, if you need help getting a good photograph, Lonnie is offering to take a photo of your weaving for you on January 22nd, at the North Berkeley Library, 12:30 - 4:30 PM. Process: Dropp off your piece(s) early, then come back later to pick them up. Please note: This is date is for photographing your artwork only. Lonnie still needs your form(s) submitted with picture(s) to her at the Library, or via email by 6:00 PM on January 22nd.

  • DROP OFF: At Richmond Art Center, Friday, March 20th, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or on Saturday, March 21st, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. More information will be provided regarding the delivery of selected pieces to the RAC, as we get closer to that date.

EXHIBITION DATES

  • Exhibition Opens, Wednesday, April 8, through Friday, June 5, 2026

  • Opening Reception: Saturday, April 11, 1 pm-3 pm

  • Artwork Pick-Up from Richmond Art Center: Saturday, June 6, 10 am-3 pm

Those of you who may be unfamiliar with an Artwork submission form, please feel free to reach out to me (Vicky) or Lonnie for assistance.

Weaving Cloth for Clothing

The study group will start working on "Weaving Cloth for Clothing." This will be a multi-month endeavor where participants will explore clothing options they would like to make and the textile needs. We'll also design and plan our weaving, then construct an article of clothing. It will be an opportunity to explore textiles, colors and structures, and to create a unique wardrobe item from beautiful fibers.

Members are encouraged to join the study group and learn from each other. No prior sewing experience is needed. We have some great resources and experienced members who can advise on fabric considerations for weaving, as well as clothes-making assembly and sewing activities. Options might include:

  • making a scarf

  • a simple piece of clothing based on rectangles, like a poncho, a vest, or a kimono

  • something more complex...

Susie, an experienced sewer, has a binder of simple rectangle-based clothing and resources from prior study groups on this topic.

Below are two examples of clothing made by Koko - an "origami jacket" and a vest with weft fibers from her Mother's funeral kimono.
