Cabbage - cloth off-cuts.png

Cabbage

A real textile odditiy is the use of the term cabbage to mean small pieces of cloth stolen by tailors, or small profits taken in kind as cloth.

It originated in the 17th century, maybe from garbage, not meaning general rubbish, but originally animal and fish entrails. Apparently, garbage is unrelated both to the verb garb, meaning to clothe, and to garb, a noun embracing your style or the way you are clothed. Garb in that sense came from Old High German root maninging adornment, and became grace or elegance in the mid 17th century.

The term cabbage to decribe small leftover pieces of fabric is still in use in the textile trade.
